South Africa 2018

Background information about the project

In 2010, the Foundation Perspectief Zwolle conceived the plan to start an AID project in the area of Umbumbulu, KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Umbumbulu is a township in the District Municipality of Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.

The township is nearby the junction of Highway M30 and R603 about 13 km south-west of Durban and 19 km from the Indian Ocean.. Umbumbulu is a rural area bordered by Madundube in the north-east and the farming community of Mid-Illovo in the south. In the 1970s and 1980s it was a scene of a local conflict with hundreds murdered and thousands dislocated. Since then it has become an image of serene rural living.

After the successful completion of building an Aids treatment center and a Multifunctional center by the Mafakathini NGO the idea was born to start working on a new project for the community. This new project was designed and planned in May 2016 and in March of 2017 the decision was taken by the Foundation Perspectief Zwolle to proceed with the project whereby the goal of the construction project is to have the multifunctional center completed in 2018.

The project consists of building a multi-functional building for the village community of Umbumbulu, in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. The realization consists of raising money and rolling up the sleeves by the participants from Zwolle in South Africa.

The implementation of the project is scheduled from now until the end of 2018. It includes the following phases:
– Preparation of the project, both in The Netherlands and in South Africa,
– Making a building plan,
– Collecting money,
– Preparing the trip and the first work on site,
– The trips to South Africa and the partial realization of the construction,
– Phasing out of the building and the financial settlement.
2 construction projects will be part of the realization phase.

Purpose of the projectplan

With the project plan, Foundation Perspectief Zwolle want to give a clear view of what needs to be realized and how it needs to be done. A very important aim of the project is to give the community of Umbumbulu the opportunity and tools to realize the United Nations Goals for 2016.  For now, the main objective is the realization of a multifunctional building for the village community of Umbumbulu, KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Which will require the NGO in South Africa and the Foundation in Zwolle to raise the necessary funding for the project.

Another important objective of Foundation Perspectief Zwolle is to bring (young) Dutch participants closer with peers from South Africa. They can then learn from peers, how to work together and realize a project in a total different environment and circumstances. Whereby the guiding thought is to strengthening the ties between the participants themselves.

5.   Gender Equality

Organization

Project realization will be done in collaboration with the village community of Umbumbulu, Foundation Perspectief Zwolle and Atos Foundation. For the organization and realization within South Africa a local NGO needed and this one is led by Rev. Th. Hlela. This includes obtaining the necessary approvals, acquiring the land, establishing the requirements, making a construction plan, selecting a the contractor and the purchasing (in cooperation with the contractor) of all  materials.

In addition, the NGO in South Africa will be asked to select accommodation for the Dutch participants. The Atos Foundation participants will try to collect (part of) the necessary funds, organize the travel to Durban in South Africa and the construction of the first part of the building.  Between the NGO in South Africa and the Atos Foundation Netherlands will be made an cooperation agreement, known by Atos employees as ‘RACI’. Also including the activities to be finished by the contractor before the Dutch group will arrive.

Description of the building

The sizing is related to a number of South African steel construction standard sizes. When the multi-functional building is finished it can be used for a number of activities:
